110-Year-Old New Jersey Man Reveals Longevity Secrets, Lives Solo
The current life expectancy for Americans in 2024 is 79.25 years. It’s pretty rare for people to live to 100, much less past it. It’s even more uncommon for men, with 90% of people over the age of 100 being women. Considering all this, it’s quite an achievement for a man to reach the age of 110. That’s exactly what Vincent Dransfield accomplished, though, and today, he’ll explain how he did it.
Dransfield’s Remarkable Age
Vincent Dransfield is a former New Jersey volunteer fire chief and great-grandfather of seven. He recently turned 110 years old. He celebrated his 110th birthday on March 28, 2024, at his former engine house, Singac Volunteer Fire Company #3. Dransfield is one of the few men worldwide to make it over 100, as women make up 90% of that age group.
Independent Living
Despite his advanced age, Dransfield lives independently and drives daily. He has no home aide or extra help and can cook for himself. His health issues are minimal, with only some knee pain to complain about.
Lack Of Major Diseases
Remarkably, Dransfield has never had cancer, dementia, or other major diseases. He attributes his longevity to factors beyond just healthy habits.
Habits
Dransfield isn’t a health nut. He smoked cigarettes for 20 years and worked until his late 70s. His diet includes hamburgers, milk chocolate, Italian food, and an occasional beer. He also enjoys coffee every day.
Luck And Milk
Dransfield credits luck and milk for his long and healthy life. Growing up on a dairy farm, he had an unlimited supply of milk, which he says contributed to strong bones. These days, he supplements cow milk with Ovaltine for added flavor and vitamins.
Passion For Volunteering
Dransfield spent 80 years with his local firehouse, including a stint as the fire chief. His long career as a volunteer firefighter kept him happy, sharp, and connected to friends. When asked what kept him going, he answered without hesitation: “the fire department” and the friendships he formed there.
Family
Dransfield is a dad of one, grandfather of three, and great-grandfather of seven. His family bonds have likely contributed to his health and longevity.
Work Ethic
Dransfield dropped out of school before high school and began working at a dairy farm at age 15. He delivered milk for five years, which he says laid a good foundation for his health. His work ethic extended to his career as an auto parts store manager.
Positive Outlook
Dransfield’s granddaughter, Erica Lista, describes him as someone who laughs at people who jog, wondering where they’re running to. His positive outlook and sense of humor probably positively impact his health.
No Headaches Or Backaches
Dransfield doesn’t suffer from common ailments like headaches or backaches despite his age. His overall health remains remarkably good, even at the age of 110!
Meeting Friends Through Volunteering
Dransfield’s social connections through volunteering with the fire department have been crucial to his well-being. Meeting so many friends over the years has undoubtedly contributed to his happiness, as he even said so himself.
A Life Well Lived
Dransfield sums it up by saying, “I’ve been very, very, very lucky in my lifetime.” His combination of luck, milk, and doing what he loves has resulted in a remarkable and healthy life.
