A Vermont University Awarded A Cat With An Honorary Degree Titled “Doctor of Litter-ature”

A Vermont university has awarded Max the cat an honorary degree titled “Doctor of Litter-ature,” celebrating him as a cherished member of the university right before the student’s graduation. Max, formally known as Max Dow, has become a beloved presence on campus ever since he moved into a nearby home with his owner, Ashley Dow, approximately five years ago. His proper term now is Dr. Max Dow.
Where He Lives

The beloved cat lives with his human family in a house on the street that leads right to the campus’s main entrance. His owner said he goes on campus and chills with the students, and apparently, they just love him!
Degree Title

His honorary degree title of “Doctor of Litter-ature,” is nothing short of hilarious. It’s a lighthearted way to honor his presence on campus and bring some smiles to the community.
Four Years

For around four years, Max has been hanging out on campus, much to the excitement of the students. They love picking him up for selfies and hanging out with him!
Tours

He even joins in on tours with prospective students, which start at a building right across from his family’s house. Ashley Dow said, “I don’t even know how he knows to go, but he does. And then he’ll follow them on their tour.”

In a Facebook post about Max, the university talked about him being a part of the family. “Max the Cat has been an affectionate member of the Castleton family for years,” the post read.
First Class

The post continued, saying “He lives with his wonderful owners on Seminary Street and loves socializing with friends outside Leavenworth. While his adventures may have slowed, Max exemplifies the #CastletonWay and we are honored to have him as a member of VTSU’s #firstclass.”
Catnip Perks

The post also said, “With a resounding purr of approval from the faculty, the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has bestowed upon Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges, and litter box responsibilities that come with it.”

The facebook post made it clear that his name isn’t just Max Dow anymore, but Dr. Max Dow! It reads, “Congratulations Dr. Max Dow! #VermontStateUniversity #𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗦leton #Classof2024.”
